Year 1 Request for Applications
Request for Applications:
Knowledge of AIDS (KOA) Small Grants for Core Network Members
Projects Related to the Year 1 Theme, “The Archive of AIDS”
Knowledge of AIDS (KOA) is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Research Collaboration Network (RCN) project that seeks to form scholarly community for social scientific, humanistic, and socio-technical researchers of HIV/AIDS broadly situated within the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). We are now accepting applications for small grants from network members to support scholarly community building efforts.
We seek to fund two or more projects proposed by network members from a total of $5,000 in available funding (we are hoping to fund 2 or 3 small grants). This RFA contains information on how network members can submit applications as well as information about the eligibility and review process.
Examples of types of projects that could receive supports:
A “pop-up workshop,” small/regional gathering, or other convening of a subset of KOA network members and potentially others participants on a focused theme
A multi-day writing intensive to produce a scholarly product (e.g., grant application, state-of-the-field article, scholarly manifesto, special issue proposal)
A “grant incubator” process (e.g., compensation for multiple reviewers external to the network to provide feedback on a grant or help develop a collaborative grant)
Book or article manuscript workshop (e.g., compensation for scholarly reviewers of manuscripts-in-progress and costs for a half-day discussion with other readers)
A virtual reading group (e.g., to cover books)
Public-facing work (e.g., a curated exhibition, public humanities event, podcast production costs, printing and design of a Zine)
Eligibility criteria and other information:
We are aiming to fund 2 to 3 projects; while groups may apply for the full $5,000, we will likely ask you to reduce your budget if your project is awarded
Proposed projects must be generally related to the network’s Year 1 theme of “The Archive of AIDS”
Applications must involve a core member of the KOA Research Community Development network (those invited to attend the April 2024 workshop in Seattle)
Applications must involve more than one person and be collaboration-oriented
Preference will be given to applicants to support projects stemming directly from one of the collaboration groups formed during the April 2024 workshop in Seattle
Preference will be given to proposals for seed funding that will lead to larger collaborative scholarly outputs (e.g., a grant application, special issue proposal, state-of-the field article, etc.) or a more enduring collaboration
We cannot fund:
Research (e.g., archival research, human subjects research)
Personnel costs (e.g., salaries)
Equipment costs (e.g., laptops, recording equipment)
Editorial support (e.g., hiring an editor for developmental editing)
Institutional indirect costs (i.e., federal “F&A” costs)
Conference registration costs (e.g., to fund attendance at 4S)
Submission and review timeline:
May, 2024: Application window opens
July 31st, 2024: Deadline for full consideration
August 31st, 2024: Initial decisions announced
All funds must be expended by the start of the Year 2 workshop (March 26th, 2025).
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated.
Submission process and requirements:
